Все началось еще в 2001 году, когда пара молодых людей Sean Suhl и Missy Suicide с верой в идею что творческий потенциал и индивидуальность могут гармонично существовать с сексуальностью, основали проект «Suicide Girls». Это современное медиа-пространство с агрессией и сексуальностью, явление на стыке эротики, арт-фотографии, панк-рока и просто невозможного тщеславия. Это новейший способ поиска собственной индивидуальности.
«Термин «Suicide Girls» использовался мною и моими друзьями для описания девушек, которые мы видели на Пионер площади Портланда с скейтбордом в руке, в байке Minor Threat, с Ice Cube в их iPod, читающих книгу Ника Кэйва. Это девушки, которые не вписывались ни в одну из устоявшихся субкультур и не старались описать себя через определенный музыкальный вкус вроде панка, металла, готики и так далее. Мне кажется, что единственные четкие классификации на данный момент для идентификации себя это мэйнстрим и вне мэйнстрима. Вот почему мы назвали наш проект Suicide Girls» — говорит Missy.
После того как в 2003 году проект Suicide Girls вышел из андеграунда, он стал не просто успешным проектом с более чем 1000000 уникальных посетителей в неделю, а превратился в современную марку образа жизни. Suicide Girls отказались от стереотипов навязанные «Плейбоем» и «Воком», они успешно создали собственные: пирсинг, татуировки, бледная кожа, атрибуты готики и т.д. Как признаются многие участницы проекта, к ним стали часто подходить 14-летние девочки и говорить, что тоже мечтают стать Suicide Girls. «Suicide Girls» стал этаким «Плейбоем» нового поколения.
Впервые арт-порно перестало быть анонимным и обезличенным: каждая модель — это личность, в чем посетители могут убедиться, прочитав блог любой из девочек. Хотя большинство Suicide Girls — американки, проект содержит девочек со всех континентов, включая и Антарктиду. Моделью может быть кто угодно. Администрация проекта утверждает, что сами не ищут моделей. Каждую неделю им приходит более 1000 анкет от девушек, со всего мира желающих стать Suicide Girl. В начале только одна или две из них в неделю могли бы быть приняты, но теперь в картотеку добавляется по новой девушке в день. Чтобы стать одной из участниц, нужно послать на электронную почту photographycoordinator@suicidegirls.com ссылку к вашему портфолио, и если вы подойдете, возможно, вам ответят.
«Для меня это была не порнографическая эксплуатация, а участие в живом художественном
проекте, — говорит Dia. — Я хотела делать что-то сама, и мне казалось, что это отличается от всего, что я видела до этого».
Сайт также функционирует как интернет-сообщество с профилями участников и форумами, с частым появлением интервью крупных фигур популярной и альтернативной культуры.
