С этого момента молодой человек потихонечку стал втягиваться в странные отношения двух женщин, и вскоре Клер передала свою рабыню в полнейшее подчинение Жану, который не стал противиться, а с удовольствием присоединился к публичному унижению и избиению Анны. Однако столь странный любовный треугольник не мог существовать вечно, и в один прекрасный день отношения его участников друг к другу резко изменились...
Середина семидесятых годов была тем периодом, когда Метцгер уже перешел от softcore-эротики к порнографии, что не сказалось, однако, на качестве его фильмов, ибо режиссер всегда ставил во главу угла не гинекологический показ половых актов на экране, а рассказываемую историю. Действительно, "The Image" содержит весьма откровенные эпизоды, но их присутствие в картине обусловлено исключительно тематикой рассказываемой истории, и все внимание режиссера акцентируется не на физиологии, а на психологии садомазохистских отношений и природе сексуальности как таковой. Именно благодаря тому, что фильм рассказывает историю странных взаимоотношений трех людей, а не состоит исключительно из нарезки беспорядочных половых актов, этой картине действительно удалось весьма глубоко "раскрыть" непростую тему BDSM-lifestyle, поэтому отзывы многочисленных критиков об этом фильме в превосходной степени более чем оправданы.
Фильм разбит на десять глав, на протяжении которых мы имеем возможность проследить за развитием отношений Жана, Клер и Анны от их самого первого знакомства до неожиданного (хотя и закономерного) финала. При этом каждая глава посвящена одному из аспектов их союза, и по сути дела фильм потихонечку и постепенно препарирует всю психологическую подноготную отношений «раб-хозяин».
