Mikoto "Biribiri, The Railgun, The Electromaster, Shocker, Tokiwadai Ace" Misaka
Mikoto Misaka is one of the series' main heroines in Toaru Majutsu no Index series and the protagonist of her side story, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. A psychic user of Academy City, her powers are ranked Level 5, the highest rank for the most powerful psychic users, and she ranks as third-strongest out of the seven people who hold this rank in Academy City.
She attends Tokiwadai Middle School, a famous girls' school for the rich and elite psychics and one of the five elite schools of Academy City. To most people, she is considered a proper lady, but in reality, she has a short-tempered, prideful, and improper attitude with some tomboyish tendencies and insecurities, a fact few other characters know. She is fond of cute, childish things, such as flowery pajamas and Gekota, the popular frog mascot franchise. She has a strong sense of morals and hates injustice, contrary to what she claims. Her power is to generate electricity; she is powerful enough to cause a blackout in the city, make instant railguns by using coins as projectiles, and use electricity to magnetically attract iron particles around her into a chain-sword whip. She can also manipulate electrical objects such as networks and security systems. She has a one-sided rivalry with Touma, who nicknames her "Biribiri" (relating to the sound of an electric shock), ever since their first meeting before the events of the first novel when he first dissipated her electricity. Since that incident, she is always trying to have a proper match with Touma and defeat him despite his many attempts to avoid conflict

Kuroko Shirai
Mikoto's kohai in Tokiwadai Middle School and a protagonist in Toaru Kagaku no Railgun and main character in the eighth volume of the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novels. A Level 4 psychic, she is a member of Judgment, a special public committee group whose duty is to maintain peace and order in Academy City. She has an unhealthy obsession with Mikoto, who she calls "Onee-sama" (big sister); she is on the constant lookout for a chance to get physically intimate with Mikoto (and getting called a pervert in the process), and tends to get jealous if someone else gets her attention; this unfortunately happens to be Toma since he has caught the attention of Mikoto for various reasons. However, it's been shown on few occasions that she is genuinely in love with Mikoto, even allowing herself to get severely hurt (see Tree Remnant arc) in order to help Mikoto. She is classified as Mikoto Misaka's best friend. Her power is instant teleportation, which allows her to teleport herself and anything in her possession as long it weighs under around 130-137 kilograms to anywhere in a radius of around 81-85 meters. She generally carries a strap of needles around her leg that she can teleport to pin down enemies. One disadvantage of her power is that she has to concentrate on where she, the object(s), and/or person she holds would be teleported to, for any disturbance in her concentration will make her powers useless.

Index "Dedicatus545" Librorum Prohibitorum
Index, also known by her full name Index Librorum Prohibitorum ("List of Prohibited Books"), is one of the main heroines and the titular character of the series. She is a young nun from Necessarius (Hitsuyouaku no Kyoukai, "Church of Necessary Evil"), a branch of the Church of England. Index is small in stature and has a petite build. About 14 or 15 years old, she has thigh-length, silvery-blue hair with very white skin and large green eyes. She also wears a white robe with golden embroidery sewed onto every edge of it, the Walking Church, that prevents any injury on her, but it is later destroyed by Touma when he touched it with his right hand, which is why her uniform is stitched with golden pins. Her mind has been implanted with the 103,000 magical texts of the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum as she possesses Photographic memory, which makes magicians wonder if she really is human because just one grimoire is poisonous to the mind, and one is more than enough to kill a person without the proper preparative.

Ruiko Saten
A Level 0, classmate and friend of Uiharu who is known for wearing a flower on the left side of her hair.
She is a little shameless as she sometimes flips Uiharu's skirt in public.
She first appears in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga and its anime series and makes a cameo appearance in the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series and the opening of the anime.

Kazari "Uiharu-n" Uiharu
Shirai's friend and colleague in Judgment and another protagonist in Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. Shy and humble, she goes to Sakugawa Junior High, different from Shirai's, and is known for wearing a headband made of flowers on her head, and sometimes a surgical mask as she constantly suffers the flu. She has a sweet tooth but is often called for Judgment duties before she can enjoy her sweets. She displays various skills with the use of the computer, such as repelling hackers and information gathering.
She makes a cameo appearance in the opening of the Index anime and appears as a supporting character in the second season. She has small parts in the novels, larger ones in the Railgun SS novels.
