SS CAMP 5 : WOMEN HELL
SS Camp Womens Hell movie is one of the most bizarre WIP. The scene takes place in an SS camp and as the video french cover says : « it contains perverted voyeurism which could offense sensitive people ».
To touch on the holocaust is a delicate thing. It is pretty shocking to take this subject unseriously and yet, this is only a B-movie, a pure exploitation flick. If it somewhat denounces atrocities, the director chose to show gory stuff along with nazi camps, which not something of good taste. Director Sergio Garrone is a specialist of the genre. Between 1976 and 1983, he directed some jewels : SS Experiment Love Camp, Captive Women Hell: Hell Penitentiary, etc.
If the Schindler’s list manages to be up to its ambition, Womens hell has the same ambition but very few means and a moralistic message that is just plain dumb. Moreover, the film shows off telling that the story is inspired by actual facts that were going on in Poland. Why not…
The opening sequence shows the arrival of prisoners in the camp. Magda, the chief guard selects girls to make prostitutes for the german officers of the camp. Women react in different ways. Some of them like the job pretty quickly. And here it is. While some synthesizer music is played, we get to see some soft group sex party. But really, it doesn’t seem girls are prisoners and it doesn’t like world war 2 at all.
Girls who hasn’t been selected by Magda were not so lucky. They have to step in the laboratory to be the subject of various and dubious experiments. Doctors apply on one unlucky girl’s thigh a sort of green cream. In fact it is some flamable product and the girl is burnt while being still conscious. The germans have forced a jewish scientist to work on a medicine that would cure the wounds very quickly. Consequently, the professor and her daughter are spared from tortures and slaughters. The morale is told by this professor : don’t despair to live, think about the future generations. It’s should be beautiful but here it is more ridiculous.
Besides the lounge orgy, the director puts in his film real images from the holocaust. This gives the movie a ludicrous look because this just doesn’t stick with the sexploitation aspects of the project. What a nice bad taste !
Besides the everyday life at the camp, the movie develops a somewhat surprising story. A group of women attempt to flee but they’re arrested and burnt in a stove. Here the movie tends to become barbarian. The camp commander try to make the women talk, using medevial tortures. Fingers are burnt and torn off. The commander also uses a fist armed with claws. He carries on a piercing in the head thanks to a vise and ends up pulling out the tongue of a prisoner… These sudden gory scenes are rather worrying.
The reste of the movie is more conventionnal and looks like a war movie. Russians manage to dominate the front line and free the camp. Prisoners take advantage of their freedom by killing some nazi with a machine gun. The End.
