Annie Sprinkle's documentary adaptation of her acclaimed autobiographical one-woman stage production, "Herstory of Porn--From Reel to Real," owes more to the chroma key production values of contemporary porn than it does to either the bigscreen or the theatre. Using blue screen superimposition techniques and videography rather than film, the actor/director appears as a kind of demented cross between Lily Tomlin and Spalding Gray, creating a giddy and hydra-headed persona that starts out in pigtails and with a feigned little-girl innocence and ends up a worldy, happier-but-wiser survivor, with a slightly addled and schizophrenic message. Sprinkle seems to want to appall us with some of the more degrading of her movie exploits, though she ends her film with a "free speech has its price" soliloquy advocating not an end to porn but an end to exploitative porn--the kind Sprinkle seems to suggest comprised the bulk of her own career.
Owing to the liberal use of at times nauseatingly graphic film clips from Sprinkle's "oeuvre," "Herstory" is not for the squeamish. No orifice is left unpenetrated, and no bodily function goes undepicted; depending on a viewer's proclivities, it's either a rambunctious turn-on or it can all get to be a bit much.
The vividness of some of the, shall we say, "imagery" might lead some potential audience members to see "Herstory" as a bold and brazen work. Bizarrely, the thing that's missing from this film built on epidermal and vulvic nakedness is that deeper sense that the woman delivering the extended monologue has been truly revealed. We get some fascinating facts about Sprinkle's life, including her brief foray into tantric sexual mysticism, without any indication of the psychological and/or spiritual crises or epiphanies that may have precipitated her own personal growth and change.
When, late in the film, Sprinkle offhandedly remarks that she made the first in a series of lesbian-themed porn features because "by this point, I had become a lesbian," and then offers no further explanation of this rather provocative transformation, it's possible to feel cheated. So many interesting questions are begging to be asked: Was lesbianism something Sprinkle had always felt within herself? Did it come to her via the numerous female partners she involved herself with over the course of the years for the sake of the cameras? Did her front-row seat for some of the more degraded aspects of masculine desire have anything to do with her change of attitude? A fruitful area of analysis, especially given the almost relentlessly sexual nature of "Herstory's" narrative line. But Sprinkle doesn't so much as acknowledge that a major shift in her thinking has taken place. Perhaps for her it hasn't, or perhaps, like many exhibitionists, it may be that the very blatantness of Sprinkle's need to display herself is her way of keeping the audiences she plays to from ultimately getting too close.
